- La primera crisis financiera global del S. XXI, conocida por todos como “crisis subprime”, ha llevado a la profesión económica a recuperar dos teorías que, a primera vista, parecen ajustarse al curso de los acontecimientos vividos en los años más recientes: la “hipótesis de la inestabilidad financiera” de Hyman Minsky y la teoría austriaca del ciclo económico (Ludwig von Mises y Friedrich A. von Hayek), también denominada teoría del ciclo monetario endógeno. Frente a la visión minskyana de un sistema capitalista inherentemente inestable, este trabajo presenta la teoría del ciclo monetario endógeno como un marco teórico y conceptual que permite diferenciar entre las fases de crecimiento económico sostenible –apoyadas en la generación previa de ahorro real–, y las etapas de crecimiento insostenible –estimuladas por procesos de expansión crediticia en un entorno de laxitud monetaria–, que dan lugar a economías de burbuja y a ciclos económicos expansivo-recesivos. Este marco teórico se utiliza para explicar la actual crisis económica y financiera. The first global financial crisis of the 21st century, known as the sub-prime crisis, has led the economic profession to get back to two theories that prima facie seem to match the evolution of events of the past years: Hyman Minky´s “financial instability hypothesis” and the Austrian business cycle theory (Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich A. von Hayek), also named as endogenous monetary business cycle theory. In contrast to the view of Minsky that regards the capitalist system as inherently unstable, this article presents the endogenous monetary business cycle theory as a theoretical and conceptual framework that allows to differentiate between periods of sustainable economic growth (sustained by a prior increase in real savings) and periods of unsustainable growth (stimulated by the process of credit expansion in an environment of loose monetary policy) that result in economic bubbles and business cycles. This theoretical framework is then used to explain the current economic and financial crisis.
